Baartman, Jansen propel holders Sunrisers Eastern Cape to SA20 final

CAPE TOWN: Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen rattled Durban’s Super Giants to help Sunrisers Eastern Cape register a 51 run-victory in the Qualifier 1 of the SA20 here on Tuesday.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape qualified for the final of the SA20 for the second time in a row, after winning the inaugural season last year.

The defending champions got a decent start as Jordan Hermann (21) and Dawid Malan raised 45 runs in 6.1 overs before opposing captain Keshav Maharaj broke the partnership.

Tom Abell (2) also fell prey to Maharaj in the next over, bringing Eastern Cape skipper Aiden Markram to the crease.

Markram joined hands with Malan to construct a 49-run stand for the third wicket, however, Dwaine Pretorius sent Malan back to halt the home side’s progress.

Malan top-scored with a 45-ball 63, which included six boundaries and one six.

Markram also followed his partner back to the dressing room after scoring an anchoring 30 off 23 with a single boundary and six.

The home side continued to lose wickets at regular intervals slipping from 110-3 to 151-8 in the final over.

Liam Dawson (9) and Daniel Worrall (1) went unbeaten as Sunrisers Eastern Cape scored 157/8 in their allocated 20 overs.

Maharaj and Junior Dala bagged two wickets each for the Super Giants while Naveen-ul-Haq and Dwaine Pretorius managed one each.

Chasing 158, Durban’s Super Giants did not get the desired start as Baartman and Jansen’s brilliant new-ball performance reduced them to 13-3 in 3.5 overs.

Quinton de Kock, who witnessed the wickets tumbling from the other end, was joined by Wiaan Mulder and they knitted a cautious 44-run partnership.

Dawson ended De Kock’s snailing innings, which conceded 23 balls for 20 runs and featured two boundaries.

Mulder top-scored with a 34-ball 38, laced with four boundaries and one six before he also fell to Dawson, reducing the Super Giants to 81-5 in 13.4 overs.

With 77 required from six overs, Heinrich Klaasen played a 15-ball cameo scoring 23 runs with two sixes before Baartman struck.

Durban’s Super Giants could not recover as Baartman and Jansen wrapped their innings at 106, picking the last four wickets for a mere seven runs.

Baartman claimed bowling figures of 4-10, while Jansen got 4-16 to guide their side to the back-to-back SA20 finals.

Meanwhile, Durban’s Super Giants will have another chance to qualify as they will face the winner of the Eliminator between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings.
