Shamar Joseph rewarded with international contract by West Indies

Young pace sensation Shamar Joseph was rewarded with an international contract by Cricket West Indies (CWI), upgrading from a Franchise contract after his heroics during the Carribeans’ historic Test win over Australia at the Gabba.

Joseph claimed seven wickets during Australia’s second innings to power the West Indies to their first victory over Australia since 1997, resulting in him getting rewarded by CWI.

“As exhilarated as we are, it is also dutiful to elevate Shamar Joseph to a CWI International retainer contract,” said Enoch Lewis, CWI Director and Chair of the Cricket Development and Performance Committee.

“His extraordinary talent and steadfast dedication serve as the cornerstone of our team’s recent triumph at the Gabba, and such promise merits its due recognition. Shamar has not just been rewarded with a retained contract he has earned it.”

Notably, Joseph rose to fame for his exceptional grit when he defied a toe injury to help his team register an upset victory over the hosts.

Joseph went through scans after retiring hurt on Saturday night when he was hit on the toe by a Mitchell Starc yorker, however, he came back to the field on Sunday and took 7-68 as the West Indies bowled Australia out for 207.

Australia had resumed the day at 60-2 with Steve Smith, who carried his bat for a superb 91 not out, and Cameron Green looking comfortable against Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph.

Shamar Joseph, who had to retire hurt after being hit on the toe in the second innings on Saturday night, did not bowl Saturday and only came into the attack 45 minutes into the first session.

He dismissed Green when the Australian number four chopped on, then bowled Travis Head with a beautiful yorker.

He then dismissed Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc before claiming the match-winning wicket of Josh Hazlewood, the last Australian to be dismissed. For his heroics, Shamar Joseph was adjudged the player of the match.
