Xavier Bartlett’s four-fer propels Australia to whitewash West Indies

CANBERRA: Xavier Bartlett picked four wickets to bundle West Indies to a paltry total before the batters guided Australia to whitewash the visitors in the ODI series at Manuka Oval on Tuesday.

Bartlett’s four-fer rattled the visitors as they got bowled out for a meagre 86, meanwhile, Australia chased down the total in 6.5 overs, earning an eight-wicket victory in the third ODI.

Australia invited West Indies to bat first and Bartlett proved the decision right with an early blow to dismiss Kjorn Ottley (8) in his second over.

Keacy Carty scored a cautious 10 before Lance Morris ended his turbulent stay at the crease with 38 runs on the board.

Alick Athanaze held on to one end defensively, while Sean Abbott removed West Indian skipper Shai Hope (4), followed by Morris castling the debutant Teddy Bishop.

Athanaze and Roston Chase raised an anchoring 27 runs for the fifth wicket before Adam Zampa ended Athanaze’s 60-ball innings which accumulated 32 runs with two boundaries.

With West Indies stranded at 71-5 in 19.5 overs, Bartlett produced a brilliant spell to wrap things up quickly. He got Romario Shepherd caught behind, followed by Matthew Forde’s run-out in the same over.

Chase, who was the only third batter to cross double figures from West Indies, fell prey to Bartlett in the next over after scoring 12.

Bartlett hit the final nail in the coffin as he removed Alzarri Joseph, bundling West Indies on 86 in 24.1 overs.

He led the bowling charts with figures of 4-21, while Morris and Zampa bagged two wickets each for Australia.

In response, Australian batters came out all guns blazing as Jake Fraser-McGurk and Josh Inglis produced a blistering 67-run opening pair off only 28 balls.

Joseph provided the breakthrough he got Fraser-McGurk caught at mid-on after the batter scored 41 off 18, laced with five boundaries and three sixes.

Inglis continued his free-flowing knock while Aaron Hardie fell to Oshane Thomas with a mere seven runs required to win.

Australian captain Steve Smith joined Inglis and ended the game with a boundary and a double to finish the game in 6.5 overs.

Inglis scored an unbeaten 35 from 16 balls with the help of four boundaries and one six.

Bartlett was adjudged man of the match as well as man of the series for his tally of eight wickets in the series.
