Pretoria Capitals sink MI Cape Town to boost SA20 Playoffs hopes

CAPE TOWN: Wayne Parnell’s four-wicket haul, followed by a combined batting effort propelled Pretoria Capitals to a narrow four-wicket victory over home side MI Cape Town in the 28th match of the ongoing SA20 2024 here on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, MI Cape Town registered a decent total of 163/9 on the board, courtesy of Rassie van der Dussen’s quick century at the top.

The right-handed opener also knitted a solid opening partnership which yielded 62 runs in just seven overs.

But with Rickelton’s departure after a 24-ball 35, including three boundaries and two sixes, MI Cape Town lost their momentum and went into a defensive mode.

The home side also lost wickets at regular intervals while van der Dussen ticked the scoreboard single-handedly before finally perishing in the penultimate over.

Parnell led the bowling charge for Pretoria Capitals with 4/33, followed by Adil Rashid and Eathan Bosch, who bagged two each.

In pursuit of the 164-run target, the Capitals amassed 167/6 on the fourth delivery of the final over.

The visitors, however, had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they lost both their openers Phil Salt (7) and Will Jacks (1) cheaply with just 11 runs on the board in 2.1 overs.

Rilee Rossouw then partnered with Kyle Verreynne briefly for a 34-run partnership before falling victim to George Linde in the seventh over, scoring a scratchy 10.

Following the slump, Theunis de Bruyn joined forces with Senuran Muthusamy and put together a brisk 45 runs for the sixth wicket before falling victim to Nuwan Thusara in the 18th over when the Capitals needed a further 31 off 15 deliveries.

He top-scored the run chase with a sensible 42 off 33 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and two sixes.

Later, Muthusamy’s belligerent knock sealed a thrilling victory for Pretoria Capitals that kept them in contention for the SA20 Playoffs. He smashed two boundaries and three sixes amid his match-winning 38 off 18 deliveries.
