Jaiswal, Bumrah put India in command against England

VISAKHAPATNAM: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s maiden Test double century, followed by Jasprit Bumrah’s six-wicket haul put India on top against England on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test.

At the stumps, India were 28/0 with Jaiswal (15) and skipper Rohit Sharma (13) unbeaten.

Earlier, Bumrah-led India’s bowling attack booked England on 253 despite Zak Crawley’s brisk half-century.

The touring side had a sloppy start to their innings as Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Ben Duckett (21) with 59 runs on the board.

But Crawley kept charging on the Indian bowlers, smashing three consecutive boundaries to Bumrah before bringing up his counterattacking half-century with a six.

The left-handed opener appeared in complete command until he mistimed off Axar Patel to fall on 76. His 78-ball blitz featured 11 boundaries and two sixes.

England then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and despite Ben Stokes’ attempt to stop the debacle with a gutsy knock, they were unfolded on 253 in the final session of the day.

Stokes remained a notable contributor for England with 47 which included five boundaries and a six.

Besides Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets while Patel picked one.

Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal single-handedly powered India to 396 while the next-best score was 34.

The left-handed batter converted his overnight score of 179 into a magnificent double-century by smashing debutant Shoaib Bashir for a six and a boundary off sweep to reach the milestone.

Seasoned pacer James Anderson then finally dismissed Jaiswal for his third wicket as the batter walked amid a standing ovation from the crowd.

Jaiswal remained the top-scorer for India with 209 off 290 with the help of 19 boundaries and seven sixes.

For England, Anderson, Bashir and Rehan Ahmed bagged three wickets apiece.
