Hayley Matthews’ ton lifts West Indies Women to post 269-8 against Pakistan

KARACHI: West Indies women’s captain Hayley Matthews scored her fifth ODI century to push her team to 269-8 against Pakistan women’s team in the first ODI of the three-match series at National Bank Stadium here on Thursday.

Matthews decided to bat first against Pakistan after winning the toss, but the hosts drew first blood as Rashada Williams fell prey to Sadia Iqbal in the third over.

Shemaine Campbelle joined her skipper and together they knitted a solid 102-run partnership to push the team’s total to 103 inside 24 overs.

Tuba Hassan brought the Pakistan women’s team back into the match, breaking the partnership, followed by another wicket in the next over to reduce West Indies to 106-3.

Campbelle went back to the pavilion after scoring a cautious 45-run knock from 71 balls with the help of four boundaries.

Matthews led from the front and took charge against Pakistan bowlers, while wickets kept falling from the other end.

The skipper was involved in notable partnerships of 40 and 42 runs with Chinelle Henry (23) and Aaliyah Alleyne (17) respectively.
