MADRID: Dutch forward Memphis Depay scored a 91st-minute goal to help Atletico Madrid snatch a late victory over Rayo Vallecano in their La Liga fixture on Wednesday at Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico stepped foot on the field on the back of a 2-0 victory over Valencia, which propelled them to the third position in the La Liga standings ahead of holders Barcelona.
They started the game strongly and in the 37th minute, Reinildo Mandava helped them take the lead as he scored a header from Rodrigo Riquelme’s crossed free-kick.

However, Alvaro Garcia superbly fired Rayo Vallecano level minutes before half-time, with a snap shot from 16 yards out which whistled beyond Jan Oblak and into the far corner.
Memphis Depay thought he had put Atletico ahead after Pablo Barrios threaded him through, but his goal was ruled out for a tight offside.
He did not slow down though, as he eventually struck for the third consecutive game when Antoine Griezmann found him with a low cross in the 91st minute.
Meanwhile, in another La Liga match, Barcelona pulled off a narrow 1-0 victory over ten-men Osasuna at Estadi OlÃmpic LluÃs Companys.

This was the first match after Xavi Hernandez’s announcement to leave the club at the end of the season.
Barcelona’s young Brazilian striker Vitor Roque scored his first goal for the club in the 63rd minute to guide his team to victory.
Barcelona remained at number four in La Liga standings behind Atletico Madrid due to their inferior goal difference.
