La Liga: Gundogan’s late penalty helps Barcelona edge Las Palmas

LAS PALMAS: Ilkay Gundogan scored a match-winning penalty in stoppage time to help Barcelona sink Las Palmas 2-1 during La Liga 2023-24 clash at Gran Canaria Stadium on Thursday.

The defending La Liga champions hit with an early blow as Munir El Haddadi scored in the 12th minute for the home side.

Haddadi hit a powerful, low shot into the bottom corner of the net after receiving a delightful pass inside the penalty area.

Sandro Ramirez made an impressive effort to further extend Las Palmas’ lead however he was blocked by Barcelona.

The first half ended at 1-1, before Barcelona turned things around in the second half with an equalizer ten minutes into the play.

Ferran Torres scored the first goal of the night for the defending La Liga champions as he hit right footed shot from the centre of the box to hit the net.

Barcelona dominated the second half with several attempts to hit the winner however the home side worked well to deny those chances.

However, in the stoppage time, La Palmas’ Daley Sinkgraven made a strong challenge inside the penalty area which was considered a foul by the referee, resulting in a red card.

Barcelona was awarded a penalty kick which was successfully converted by Ilkay Gundogan to get the win for the Catalans.

In another La Liga match, Athletic Club registered a 2-0 away victory over Sevilla at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Mikel Vesga and Aitor Paredes scored the goals to lift Athletic Club over Atletico Madrid to fourth spot in the La Liga standings with a superior goal difference.
